Adelaide Station-1950s.

Discussion on South Australian railway topics of a historic nature.
As a young lad i can just remember the activity at Adelaide Station one late afternoon/evening fare welling a family member on the "Overland" service to Melbourne.....this would have been mid 1950s i guess.
I can recall:
Brill Cars to Mount Pleasant
Brill Cars to North Gawler
Brill Cars to Port Dock
Rail Cars from Penfield,Hendon,Finsbury and GMH Woodville
520 steam to Robertstown,Spalding etc
620 steam to Barmera via Renmark etc.
D.E.s on the "Blue Lake" to Mount Gambier
RXs to Bridgewater
620 to Willunga
520s on the up "East West" express.
520s to Terowie on the Broken Hill service.
900s on the "Overland".
Plus the Red Hens on suburban services.

There may have other services that i cannot recall now.

That is why "Webb" built 13 platforms i guess.
Railways have a big future if only some would realize it/A member of N.R.M.

There were 13 platforms, but 14 roads the last one allowed for expansion if needed but it never was! Yes all platforms were used unlike today when some only see a train every so often. I too can remember some of those services you mention, as, as a child I was taken more than once to Adelaide station to see my late father off on the Overland to Melbourne on one of his football club trips to there! They were better behaved in those days though!
" Did he fire six shots or only five? But being as this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: ' Do I feel lucky? Well do you punk' "?

I can just remember the station in the late 1960s while sitting in a Brill railcar waiting to go to back to Kapunda - The station was full of life! :)
