Transport systems all go for new chief

Adelaide’s public transport system is in “very good shape” for the person who takes control early next year, outgoing TransAdelaide chief Bob Stobbe says.

It was announced yesterday Mr Stobbe has quit his role to take up the position of ETSA Utilities chief executive officer, replacing Lew Owens, who is retiring.

The search for Mr Stobbe’s replacement has begun but the Transport Department said it would “not comment publicly throughout the process”.

Mr Stobbe, 52, believes customer service for commuters has improved significantly since he started last year with TransAdelaide.

“Previously, we were probably too focused on keeping the trains running and, while we still have some way to go, we believe we have put in place some positive changes,” Mr Stobbe said.

“In particular, we have made improvements to time delays for our services and our on-time running has increased significantly over the past six months.

“The system will be handed over in very good shape with a number of new initiatives and projects planned.”

Mr Stobbe admitted the timing of his departure was not ideal, saying the ETSA job was too good to refuse.

He previously worked at ETSA as its chief financial officer, leaving in 2002. He also has served on its board.

“It’s still six months until I take over but having worked their previously I have a very good understanding of how their system operates,” he said,

“ETSA has a $3 billion investment to expand and upgrade infrastructure over the next five years which will be exciting to oversee and implement.”

Mr Stobbe will remain with TransAdelaide until next March before taking over from Mr Owens, who leaves after four years in the job.

TransAdelaide employs about 680 people and ETSA about 1800.
