SteamRanger Heritage Railway

SteamRanger Heritage Railway are operating daily <a href="http://members.iinet.net.au/~steamranger/cockletrain.htm target="_blank">Cockle Train services between Goolwa and Victor Harbor throughout the school holidays. The 30 minute trip takes passengers on a journey from Lake Alexandrina, through lush fields and along the pristine sand dunes of the south coast.

Other SteamRanger services operating these school holidays include the Highlander and Southern Encounter, both of which currently have a special 2-for-1 ticket deal.

Pichi Richi Railway

The Pichi Richi Railway will be operating Pichi Richi Explorer services each Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the school holidays. The scenic 2½ hour return journey between Quorn and Woolshed Flat takes passengers through deep rock cuttings, over superb stone wall embankments and spectacular iron bridges.

On Saturday, July 17th, an Afghan Express service will operate between Port Augusta and Quorn in place of the Explorer.

National Railway Museum

A little closer to home, the National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide is holding its annual Thomas the Tank Engine event between July 10th and 18th. There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained with amusement rides, face painting, games, train rides and more.

St Kilda Tramway Museum

Just north of Adelaide, the St Kilda Tramway Museum will open it’s doors each Wednesday and Sunday during the school holidays.

The museum has a number of historic Australian electric trams, trolley buses and horse drawn vehicles on display. Tram rides also operate between the museum and St Kilda adventure playground each open day.

Trams at the Entertainment Centre passed their first major test on a high note last night, receiving raving reviews from concert-goers.

Fans flocked to the upgraded venue on the recently opened extension to see 1970s singer-songwriters James Taylor and Carole King and went home singing the praises of both the concert and their transport.

Dozens of people arrived on each tram from 7pm until just before the concert began at 8pm and told AdelaideNow the service was quick, convenient and comfortable. Most were planning on taking trams home after the show.

David and Jill Michael, of Port Augusta, caught the tram to the Entertainment Centre from the city.

“It’s our first trip on the tram to here,” David said before the concert.

“I only found out about two hours ago that it (the extension) was even finished this far.

“It’s brilliant. It certainly beats catching a taxi and hopefully when we leave we’re not standing in a line for half an hour or three quarters of an hour as we have in the past to catch a taxi back.”

Two extra trams were added to the regular schedule to accommodate fans leaving the concert, who streamed across Port Rd to find at least one and sometimes two trams waiting at the Entertainment Centre stop’s platforms.

Hundreds of people boarded trams within minutes of the concert finishing.

The centre’s car park also seemed to switch smoothly at 6.30pm from its new role as a park and ride facility to venue car parking.

The Indian Pacific’s 40th birthday marked a double-whammy in Australia’s rail history.

It was this train that ran Australia’s first east-west rail service on standard gauge, which departed from Sydney’s Central Station on Monday, February 23 1970 and arrived in Perth on Friday, February 27 to 10,000 people.

On the train’s 40th birthday locomotive NR21 pulled the Indian Pacific from Adelaide’s Keswick Station for Sydney.

The train comprised of 24 carriages, including one locomotive and three motorail with 164 guests and 19 crew members on board.

Great Southern Rail’s Marketing and Executive Coordinator Robyn Williamson said the company is proud to be part of the train’s history.

“It’s good to be part of the history of something historic. The Indian Pacific is such an Australian icon,” she said.

Its popularity has seen it attract tens of thousands of passengers per year.

“There are people who go on trips on the Indian Pacific every year because they love it so much,” Ms Williamson said.

The 65-hour, 4,352km trip crosses the Nullarbor, the crossroad of Australia Port Augusta, historic gold-rush town Kalgoorlie and the Blue Mountains.

At 478km, the world’s longest section of railway track in the Nullarbor Plain is part of the Indian Pacific’s journey.

The Indian Pacific today can carry up to 348 passengers with 25 carriages and get up to 686 metres long.

With a two metre wing span, the wedge-tailed eagle, Australia’s largest eagle, was chosen as the Indian Pacific’s symbol to represent the train’s “epic journey,” Great Southern Rail spokesman Russell Westmoreland said to a WA Today reporter.

East-west travel by rail started in 1917 when all track sections between colonies were completed, but non-uniform gauges between the colonies meant passengers had to change several trains along the way.

The uniform standard gauge across the continent was completed in 1969.

A Glenelg-bound tram was almost derailed when it collided with a truck in the city outside the Town Hall this morning.

As the half-full tram headed south along King William St about 7.40am this morning, a Jeffries compost truck smashed into its windscreen as the truck swung around to reverse into the driveway of the Town Hall.

The windscreen of the tram was smashed and the truck came to rest about 7m along the tram. Damage to the tram is estimated at $40,000.

The female driver of the tram was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

Passenger Peter Tziavaras was seated about two metres behind the driver and the truck scraped past his head.

“It was a pretty big hit, it was a very big hit. The whole tram went to the right very, very suddenly then flicked back in,” Mr Tziavaras said.

Fellow passenger Ruth Bear said there was a “tremendous sound of glass”.

“I thought it was going to tip over,” she said.

“The whole tram shook, it was quite scary, everyone (on the tram) was scared, but it was nothing like what the driver went through.”

Andrew Laird, who was also on the tram, said the “truck just came out of nowhere”.

“There was a big bang and a shudder and it actually felt like the tram was lifting off the tracks,” he said.

Mr Laird said two off-duty police officers helped get passengers off the tram.

Shane McDonald, who was driving the truck, said he was reversing into the driveway off King William St.

” When I checked my mirrors there was no one around, then the tram sounded its horn and there was a collision,” he said.

“It was my first accident in driving trucks in seven years and hopefully it will be the last.”
