Adelaide has taken delivery of the first of four new trams from Germany, three years after they were ordered.

The tram arrived at Appleton Dock in Melbourne last Wednesday.

It was then transported to Adelaide and installed on the tracks early on Monday.

Transport Department head of public transport services, Rod Hook, says the trams were ordered in 2008, but there had been several delays.

“There were some issues with the construction of them. There were some floods in Germany which impacted the product that was being built and they had to go back and start again,” he said.

An Adelaide air-conditioning company is suing TransAdelaide, claiming it breached contract conditions and gave competitors access to trade secrets.

MooreAir accuses TransAdelaide of unconscionable conduct, claiming it sent one of the company’s air-conditioning units to a competitor in New South Wales without authorisation.

The company told the Supreme Court it has been installing and maintaining air-conditioners on public transport in Adelaide for 16 years.

MooreAir says TransAdelaide approached it in February last year to create systems for Adelaide’s Bombardier trams.

It says TransAdelaide offered a bonus, a long-term maintenance contract and the right to install systems in all future trams if the units were in place by last October.

The company says it kept its end of the bargain, but TransAdelaide has not.

TransAdelaide is yet to file a defence.
