Car on south-bound tram track in Victoria Square
A car has driven onto the tram track in Victoria Square after colliding with a tram, causing chaos to peak-hour commuting.
The female driver of the two-door Toyota, which collided with the front left of a Glenelg-bound tram as it crossed King William St by the Adelaide General Post Office, has been spoken to by police outside the Hilton Hotel and taken to hospital.
A passenger on the tram, in her 40s, has also been taken to hospital.
Witnesses said the woman, who has been detained under the Mental Health Act, got out of the car after it hit the tram, ending up about 25m along the tram track.
The woman tried to run away but was pursued by a police officer and the tram’s driver.
She was detained near the Hilton Hotel, where she initially lay on the ground before getting up and walking around flapping her arms like a chicken.
Drug squad detectives are searching her car, which has been extensively damaged.
Damage to the tram was relatively minor.
The incident has stopped trams travelling through Victoria Square.
