South Road tram overpass work to start in May

Construction of the South Rd tram overpass will begin in May.

The State Government has appointed McConnell Dowell Constructors – the team behind the Bakewell underpass – to deliver the $32 million project, which will take the city-Glenelg trams over South Rd, near the Gallipoli Underpass at Anzac Hwy.

The overpass is set to be completed in December, not long after the Gallipoli Underpass is opened to all traffic.

Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the overpass was part of the Government’s commitment to a non-stop, north-south traffic corridor from Darlington to the Port River Expressway.

Mr Conlon said disruptions to vehicle traffic during construction were inevitable but delays and detours would be minimised.

Tram services will continue to run during construction and the project will include a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian overpass.

Mr Conlon said residents’ concerns about potential reductions to privacy or property values would be dealt with through further consultation before construction begins.

Motorists will be able to drive through Gallipoli underpass for the first time tomorrow night when one lane in each direction will be open to traffic after the evening peak hour.
