Trams set to ply overpass

Trams will be running on the new Glenelg Tram Overpass within weeks.

The 40m long overpass station platform will be lifted into place on Sunday and large panels forming lift shafts for the overpass will be put in place early next week.

Project Director Paul Gelston said the 13.5m high panels would be an impressive sight each side of South Rd as the overpass took shape.

“It’s been an amazing engineering feat to construct this overpass while minimising the impact to tram customers and motorists,” he said.

“The overpass is starting to look very impressive as the final structure takes form and I’m excited for motorists and the local community who will start reaping the rewards of the project very shortly.

“This project is on the home straight to completion – we’ve got the tracks set for relocation next weekend on to the overpass and we’ll see the first trams travelling on the overpass early December.”

To ensure safe installation of the lift shaft panels, South Rd will be restricted to one lane in each direction in the vicinity of the overpass between 9am and 4pm on Monday and Tuesday.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes on both days.
